We were a little bit over-enthusiastic about driving in Italy.
B has done all the driving, mainly because of the car rental agreement stating one driver only, but also due to me feeling a bit unwell for three days now.
Our Fiat Punto diesel (the Corolla of Italy; they’re everywhere) was a little champion but we gave it a mighty thrashing.
Milano – Pian di Scò, 35km south of Florence, (410km) – Pisa & back (300km) – Cinque Terre & back (430km) – A drive through the Chianti wine region (100km) – into Florence (70km) – up to Venice (300km)
1610km in 6 days… Crazy.
We bit off more than we could chew, so to speak.
Diesel here is the norm, and you get more mileage out of it, but it’s more expensive than Australian fuel. About 70€ for a 45L tank.
Motorway fees for long drives cost us between 7€ and 22€.
Adding to the cost of the hire car, we were also charged 60€ to return it to Venice airport instead of Milan, where we picked it up from.
THANKFULLY they’re not too persnickety about little scratches… We were holding our breath on that one!
